DREAM 11
Dream 11 is a Fantasy Sport platform based online playing game which allows users to play fantasy games such as cricket, football, hockey, kabaddi and basketball. It is the first online game of India to enter the Unicorn Club. Dream11 was founded by Harsh Jain who is also the CEO and Bhavit Sheth in 2008.
FANTASY SPORT
A fantasy sport is a type of game played using the Internet, in which participants assemble imaginary or virtual teams of real players of a professional sport. These teams compete based on the statistical performance of those players’ in actual games. This performance is converted into points that are compiled and totaled according to a roster selected by each fantasy team’s manager.
FUTURE OF FANTASY SPORT IN INDIA
The concept of Fantasy sports was introduced in the country 17 years ago by ESPN Super Selector in 2001. Co-created by Joy Bhattacharya and ESPN, it involved picking a team of 11 cricket players within a limited budget. Points were awarded to contestants based on selected players’ on-field performances. Super Selector was so popular that during the 2003 Cricket World Cup in South Africa, it attracted over 500,000 contestants. The immense popularity of the Selector inspired big media houses like BBC and Sky Television to launch their own fantasy sports games.
Fantasy sports evolved over the next 17 years, from half a million, the domain reached a landmark figure of 20 million. According to the Indian Federation of Sports Gaming (IFSG) most of the growth in the domain has been seen in the last two years. In fact, of the 60 odd companies that are working in the space, 30 were launched in 2017-18 alone.
Harsh Jain launched Dream 11 in 2008 in the same year the Indian Premier League was launched however the Super Selector was closed by then so Harsh came up with FPL – a free-to-play, season-long fantasy cricket game in a graphical format, with an ad-driven business model. The company ran with this model for almost four years before realising that it wasn’t working in India. He said in an interview “We realised that [Indian] users have a low attention span,” Jain said. “They don’t want to feel like – if I don’t change my team for one week when I was travelling for work, or on holiday, or just busy with life, and then I will fall behind so much that there is no chance of me winning. They want something that has instant gratification.” So, in 2012, Dream11 pivoted to a different format – daily fantasy sports. Along with the change in format, the company also tweaked their revenue model by removing ads and instead giving users the option to put money on their teams.
PLAYING DREAM 11
The procedure is as follows:
Step 1: Log on to dream11.com. There you can find an option to ‘Register’ at the top right corner of the website. Alternatively, you can also download its mobile app for Android / iOS and register for a Dream11 account. However, from a security angle, I always recommend users to enter all their details such as name and email address manually instead of letting it access your Gmail, Facebook accounts.
Step 2: Enter your email address and select password in the respective fields. Hit register and you can immediately start exploring the website. To my surprise, Dream11 did not send any confirmation email to my registered email address. Dream11 has made it clear on their website that you should be at least 18 years to participate in cash contests.
Step 3: Once you have created your account, navigate to My Account where you can track your balance and earnings. To withdraw your wallet money into your bank account, first, you need to verify your Dream11 account by entering your mobile number. You will receive a one-time password (OTP) on your provided mobile number. Enter the OTP.
Step 4: Since it involves actual money related transactions, you also need to submit and verify your PAN card. Upload PAN card image, followed by entering your name, 10-digit PAN card number, date of birth and State. It takes at least 7 days for a PAN card to get verified. Once you get your PAN card verified, you can add your bank account to withdraw your money from the wallet.
Note: Even before your PAN is verified, you can play the game and start earning. The verification is required to get the money into your account.
